Thistles in Winter 1 by Monika Frys-Żurek
This winter portrait of a thistle was created out of admiration for a plant that does not lose its strength, even in the coldest months. Covered with delicate snow, upright and confident, the thistle stands out against the bright, blurred background like a guardian of silence. Its tiny spikes catch the light, creating subtle sparks across the surface of the photograph, while the slender arches of its dried leaves wrap around it like protective arms guarding what endures. It is an image of quietness, resilience, and beauty that reveals itself only when nature falls silent beneath the whiteness of winter.

The photograph is part of the “Thistles in Winter” collection, a series dedicated to plants that, despite the frost, retain their presence and character. The thistle has carried a symbolism of endurance for centuries - in Scotland, it became an emblem of independence and strength of spirit; in folk beliefs, it protected against evil and sometimes even brought good fortune. In this portrait, I present it as I see it in nature: solitary, self-assured, persisting despite harsh conditions. It is a photograph that brings into a space a quiet, wintery symbolism — a reminder that true perseverance needs no vivid colours to captivate.
