Icon by Monika Frys-Żurek

I am pleased to present a handcrafted icon, created out of respect for tradition and a love of sacred art. This unique piece was made using egg tempera with natural pigments on a plywood panel, following ancient recipes and my iconographic experience, which allows me to blend spiritual meaning with artisanal precision. The traditional technique of modeling faces with light gives the work a spiritual dimension and elegance.

Due to its intimate format (15 × 21 cm), I chose to frame the icon in a double gold frame, which emphasizes the character of the piece and adds a touch of refinement. The price includes the cost of this frame.

This icon can become a special spiritual accent in your home, a part of a private altar, or a meaningful gift imbued with deep symbolic significance. Every detail has been created with prayer, focus, and intention to convey light and peace.

The icon is available exclusively on commission. Each work is handmade in my studio, staying true to the original model, but—as with any genuine handcrafted piece—subtle variations in details may occur. Please note that color display may vary depending on your device settings and may not fully reflect the icon’s true hues.

The icon was painted on a plywood panel—a durable and solid support that I carefully prepared with an appropriate ground layer beforehand. To create the paints, I used a mixture of natural pigments, egg yolk, dry white wine, and a few drops of clove oil. This combination not only gives the colors depth and longevity but also allows for the characteristic, subtle chiaroscuro and soft tonal transitions—especially visible in the modeling of the face and neck of the figure.

I painted using brushes made of natural sable hair, which enable precise work in fine details. Pigments such as burnt umber, golden ochre, natural sienna, carmine red, and titanium white allowed me to build a harmonious and balanced palette. In the face and hands of the figure, light plays the central role—it guides the composition, brings out the spiritual expression, and gives the work its sacred dimension.

The background of the icon was gilded with gold leaf applied over a layer of water-based mixtion. The gilding was protected with natural shellac, safeguarding it against the passage of time and giving the surface a subtle, warm sheen. Gold not only illuminates the icon but also symbolizes the presence of God, eternal light, and divine glory.

Each piece is handmade in my studio, staying faithful to the original model, but—as with any true handcrafted work—subtle variations in details may occur.
