Communion Icon by Monika Frys-Żurek

The icon was created using the traditional egg tempera technique on a carefully prepared plywood panel. The panel consists of twelve layers — symbolic references to the twelve apostles — providing durability and the appropriate absorbency for the ground. It was on this solid base that I began transferring the image using Italian burnt sienna, which served as a tracing medium. Subsequent layers of pigment — the synopsis — guided me in capturing even the smallest details.

Areas intended for gilding were sealed with dark shellac polish applied in multiple layers, and the base for the gold leaf was made from a mixture of golden ochre and titanium white. For the gilding itself, I used gold leaf applied with water-based mixtion, and the entire surface was finished with a protective layer of light shellac polish, which safeguards the surface and gives it a delicate shine. The golden sections — symbolizing the presence of God — reflect light and draw the viewer’s gaze, creating a mood of contemplation and peace.

The face and hands of the Archangel were modeled using warm, earthy pigments: brown ochre, green umber, burnt sienna, and golden ochre. Highlights in flesh tones added lightness, while the contours — emphasized with burnt dark umber — enhanced the expression of the face and the gestures of the hands. The Archangel’s robes are composed of deep green umber, Prussian blue, titanium white, and dark cadmium yellow, enriched with shades of green earth from Vagone, cobalt turquoise, and mineral golds — both pearlescent and antique. This combination gives the figure nobility and timeless beauty.

The background was created from a blend of oxide green, cobalt green, ultramarine, and titanium white — together forming a spiritual space that is both deep and luminous.
