Gdańsk Old Town by Monika Frys-Żurek

This photograph captures my personal attempt to freeze a fleeting moment in the narrow passage between St. Mary’s Basilica in Gdańsk and the old presbytery - a place that carries the silence, the coolness of bricks, and the weight of centuries. In this sepia-styled version, I wanted to evoke the mood of early photography, as if time itself had stepped back by several generations. The image is part of the exhibition “In Search of Frozen Time,” organized by the Tarnów Cultural Center, and other color variations of this photograph are also available in the shop.

Gdańsk Old Town is my visual tribute to places that hold layers of time - visible in the walls, windows, and cobbled alleys that have witnessed countless footsteps. This narrow passageway between the monumental St. Mary’s Basilica and the former presbytery has always fascinated me with its raw beauty: intimate, shaded, quiet, yet acting as a natural gateway to the vibrant heart of the Old Town.

In this sepia version, I wanted to emphasize the nostalgia of this corner of the city, giving it the character of an old photograph discovered in a family archive - free of modern colors, leaving only light, texture, and shadow to tell the story.

The photograph is featured in the exhibition “In Search of Frozen Time” at the Tarnów Cultural Center, where I present it as a reflection on how time can be found not only in people, but also in the places that endure through change.

Other color variations of this work are available in the shop, each highlighting a different emotional layer of this same Gdańsk passageway.
