Gdańsk Old Town black and white by Monika Frys-Żurek

This black-and-white photograph was captured in the narrow passageway between St Mary’s Church in Gdańsk and the presbytery - a place that drew me in with its quiet interplay of light, history and texture. By choosing a monochrome rendition, I focused on the rhythm of the brickwork, the soft contrasts and the atmospheric calm of this historic space. Other colour variations of this frame are also available in the shop, each offering its own interpretation of the same moment.

In this black-and-white version, I wanted to emphasise structure - the rawness of the brick, the delicate sheen of the cobblestones, and the subtle play of light guiding the viewer’s gaze towards the lively square opening at the end of the alley. Stripping the image of colour reveals its pure geometry, its calm composition, and the contrast between the intimate enclosure of the passage and the inviting brightness beyond.

For me, this photograph is a quiet narrative about transition - from shadow into light, from stillness into movement, from detail into the broader rhythm of the city. I hoped that anyone looking at this image would feel both the coolness of the old stones underfoot and the gentle pull of the light ahead, as if Gdańsk were opening yet another page of its story.

Other colour versions of this frame are also available in the shop. Each offers a different emotional reading of the same place - like a memory that shifts with the mood of the person who carries it.
