Olive tree by Monika Frys-Żurek

This painting was inspired by my stay in Madrid in 2023. While walking through Parque Juan Carlos I, I was particularly struck by the old olive trees — monumental, with thick, cracked bark and a pronounced, rough trunk texture. It was the trunk of one of these trees that became the central motif of this work.

The work was executed in the impasto technique — the paint was applied in thick layers using both a brush and a palette knife, which allowed the texture to emerge and conveyed the raw surface of the tree. The painting features intentional scuffing down to the white ground, enhancing the sense of roughness and the bark’s structure. The composition is completed by the contrast of light and shadow — rays of sunlight filtering through the dense branches evoke the warmth of a June afternoon in Southern Europe.

The painting was created in 2024, between May 8 and May 25. I used acrylic paints on a cardboard panel covered with finishing spackle (Tytan brand). The surface has been protected with a satin spray varnish. The painting measures 69 × 89 cm and is framed in a double frame — with an outer wooden frame. It includes a hanging fixture, making it ready for display. The work is signed in the lower right corner.
